A proposal by Richland School Board member Larry McCracken to have tax checks deposited into interest-bearing accounts in a timely manner was unanimously approved on Monday.
Attorney Timothy Leventry supported McCracken’s motion and said elected tax collectors are required to deposit monies collected in interest-bearing accounts until those funds are returned to the school district.
“Our tax collectors didn’t do that, and we asked that they do it,” Leventry said.
The Richland School District collectors are Kathy Tercek for the Township of Richland and Sheri Buchanan for the Borough of Geistown. Both said they would prefer not to comment when contacted.
Leventry said the board had experienced significant delays in depositing money and the reason given was that the banks had suspended the funds.
“In fairness to the tax collectors here, yes, checks are held until cleared multiple times, but not for very many weeks on average,” Leventry said.
The council asked the attorney to contact area banks to investigate alleged check holds and also to note in a letter to Tercek and Buchanan that interest-bearing accounts should be opened before the next tax season.
